Touched By Darkness

Suicide.

We've all been touched by it. We've all witnessed the devastation it creates in our lives. We've all seen the heartache it leaves behind.

It's easy to be angry at suicide. It's easy to blame suicide for everything. It's easy to lose sight of why suicide came into your life.

But just remember, suicide isn't the culprit. Suicide is the escape route. The shortcut to relief. The short-term "right here right now" and not the long-term "time heals give it time". Suicide is the easy.

When you're so overwhelmed with sadness or regret or pain or anger, that's all you can see. That's all you can think about. That's all you feel. Logic leaves. Hurt overrides. And nothing that should matter, can matter anymore.

But you mustn't take suicide personally. Don't let it overcome your feelings for your loved one that's succumbed to it or attempted it. Don't let it make you feel like a failure or a mistake or meaningless to them. Nothing good can shine through when suicide is chosen.

But suicide isn't the true enemy. Suicide is the ship that depression captains. Depression is the master. The decision maker. The blanket of pain that covers up everything good in life.

You can battle depression though. You can overcome it. You can beat it. And you can help others beat it too.

There are so many organisations and professionals out there that have been educated and made prepared to go to war with depression. They have finely tuned battle plans and masses of resources to help take back the control that depression tries so desperately to hold on to. And when you rally with them as a friend or family, depression loses all of its advantages. It's forced to surrender. And eventually the thoughts of suicide become a distant memory overshadowed by love and support.

If you are concerned about someone, talk to them about it. Don't be afraid to offend them. Offence is temporary, suicide is forever. You have the power to change someone's life for the better. All you have to do is care.

Until next time,
Ruby xx
